Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language (accredited by Signature)

In this course students will be taught to understand and use BSL at an advanced level and in a wide range of work and social situations. There will be considerable emphasis on developing vocabulary enabling efficient participation in conversation with a variety of participants using complex or abstract ideas. Students will also be expected to understand and have a good use of Sign Language grammar.

This course has three units; ‘Sign Linguistics Knowledge, Understand varied BSL in a range of work and social situations’ and ‘Use varied BSL in a range of work and social situations’.

Assessment

The “Sign Language Knowledge” unit is assessed by a 45 minute written question paper which is externally assessed by Signature. Reasonable adjustment can be made upon request.

The “Understand varied BSL in a range of work and social situations” unit will be assessed as candidates show their understanding of a DVD conversation presented in BSL.

The “Use varied BSL in a range of work and social situations” unit will be assessed by candidates delivering a 8-10 minute presentation on a topic. The candidate will then have a 10-12 minute conversation with the teacher on the same topic.

On completion of the Level 3 Certificate students may choose to apply for a place on a Signature Level 6 NVQ Certificate in BSL.

Signature Level 6 NVQ Certificate in BSL course will be of interest to students who are looking to pursue careers as a Sign Language Interpreter (BSL/English), Communication Support Worker, Teacher of the Deaf and other jobs working with Deaf People.
