Reflect BSL Tutor Wins Award

We are thrilled to announce that Elizabeth Bojas (our BSL tutor) has been awarded the Signature Teacher of the Year Award for the Yorkshire and the Humber region.

We are proud of this fantastic achievement, especially considering that Reflect BSL has only been teaching students for three years.

Elizabeth’s students supported the nomination saying she was a “fantastic and dedicated teacher”.

Elizabeth said “it was a real honour to win this award and see the positive comments from the students who supported the nomination. I get a lot out of teaching and the students and I have a lot of fun. I get a great sense of satisfaction when I see the students develop but to get this award is a real bonus.”

Elizabeth will be attending a national awards night for the Signature winners in Durham Cathedral in October.

Deaf Awareness Week – 19th -25th May 2014

It’s Deaf Awareness Week – a time when people all over the UK focus on the language, culture and experience of Deaf people. Events are taking place across the country this week, and the theme this year is Access – the issues that Deaf people face.
As an organisation, Reflect BSL are always looking for ways to promote and advocate the language and to improve access for the whole community. We follow events throughout the year, and get involved where we can.
We have a growing training section, which we are continually developing to meet current demand. We offer a range of courses that help hearing people meet the needs of the Deaf community, whether as individuals or services. Our courses are tailor made and range from teaching the language to an individual so they can talk to a lonely Deaf neighbour, right through to creating a package for a staff team looking to improve the services they provide to the whole community.
Deaf Awareness is a great foundation for people who are interested in learning more about deafness, communication and deaf culture. We run courses throughout the year, and offer a flexible service. This includes running courses from individual work places in order to accommodate staff teams.

There is no better time than Deaf Awareness week to contact us to find out more information or enrol on a course. You will find details on the site, or can drop us an email with your query.

During the week we will be tweeting interesting facts about Deafness and Deaf Culture, so make sure you watch out for those.

Volunteer Communication Support Worker for Swimming Lesson

We are looking for a volunteer Communication Support Worker who would be interested in communicating for a Deaf child in swimming lessons. This is a great opportunity to get some experience of working as a Communication Support Worker and can really enhance a CV for future career progression.

We are looking for people who currently hold a level two qualification or above and have experience working with children.

The sessions are on Thursday evenings between 5.35pm and 6.05pm and are in north Leeds.

If you are interested please contact info@reflectbsl.co.uk for more details.

BSL Zone Showcase

BSL Zone Showcase is a series of events for the Deaf community to meet Deaf people involved in broadcast media. It is a great chance for Deaf people to find out about how they can make their own short films and get involved in media in the future. It is also a fantastic opportunity for hearing people who are learning BSL to understand more about Deaf culture and media.

The first showcase this year will happen in Leeds on Sunday the 27th of April 2014 at the Carriage Works.  There will be an opportunity to watch the premiere of a new BSL Zone drama, ‘Four Deaf Yorkshire men go to Blackpool.’ The cast and crew will attend and be available for a question and answer session. Other popular programmes will also be screened, and local programme making talent will be given a chance to share their media experiences.

The BSL Zone Showcase is organised by the British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust (BSLBT), an organisation who commission television programmes for Deaf people. These programmes are made in BSL, by Deaf people,  and can be viewed through BSL Zone.
