Communication Support Worker

A communication support worker, also known as a personal communication assistant, is someone with a minimum of NVQ Level 3 in British Sign Language, who can support a Deaf person in their normal working lives. A CSW translates between English and BSL and vice versa. They often translate from BSL to written English in the form of a letter or email, as well as interpreting telephone calls and ensuring the Deaf person has full access to the hearing environment.

Historically CSW’s have been used in Education, ensuring that the student has full access to the information being provided as well as additional support as agreed by the institution.
