British Sign Language / English Interpreters

BSL/English Interpreters work between two languages, BSL and English, to ensure communication between Deaf and hearing people is successful. They interpret meaning (intent) and mediate the interaction so Deaf and hearing people can understand each other.

All our interpreters are registered with the National Register of Communication Professionals working with Deaf people (NRCPD) and are members of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters (ASLI) or Visual Language Professionals (VLP). All interpreters are bound by a strict Code of Conduct and are subject to a Complaints procedure regulated by the NRCPD.

There are two different registration categories for of BSL / English interpreters:

  • Trainee Sign Language Interpreter (TSLI)
  • Registered Sign Language Interpreter (RSLI)

Trainee Sign Language Interpreter status means the interpreter is undertaking training, but has met the National Trainee Interpreter Standards and has shown he/she ‘has languages at an extended level.’ TSLI’s work in domains suited to their experience and registration category.

Registered Sign Language Interpreter status means the interpreter has completed a recognised interpreter training programme. RSLI’s work in a variety of domains, but may interpret for Police, Court Services, Mental Health Services and in any other highly complex environments.

Reflect BSL is committed to providing the best possible service, and this involves matching the interpreters’ skills and experience to both the setting and the client they are working with.

Interpreting is cognitively and physically demanding, so bookings for an extended period of time may require more than one interpreter.

Reflect BSL welcome enquiries regarding specific requirements and are happy to discuss and recommend a suitable communication package, which may include more than one type of communication professional.
